The first time you see your growing baby is exciting, which is why we offer pregnancy scans at regular stages throughout the first trimester, for your peace of mind. Helping you to enjoy the early days that build up to meeting your new arrival.

We’re here for:

  • Early pregnancy scans (including Harmonie testing)

  • Dating scans

  • Gender scans

  • 12-week scans

  • Anomaly scans

  • Growth scans

  • Down’s syndrome checks

  • Low-lying placenta checks (placenta praevia)

  • Pregnancy support and advice

Early pregnancy scans

An early scan also brings peace of mind that your baby is developing just fine ahead of the 12-week scan, particularly if you’ve had difficult pregnancies before. A baby’s heartbeat can be detected in an ultrasound scan as early as 6 weeks. If you have had any bleeding or pain or any other symptoms then this scan will accurately confirm viability.

Early pregnancy scans are performed trans-abdominally (over the abdomen) however a transvaginal scan may be necessary for earlier pregnancies, i.e. 5-7 weeks.

Reasons for an early pregnancy include:

  • Low-lying placenta checks (placenta praevia)

  • Pregnancy support and advice

  • Confirm the viability

  • To check the location and rule out an ectopic pregnancy

  • Check the heart beat

  • Calculate the gestation

  • Determine whether it is a singleton or multiple pregnancy

  • Bleeding/spotting or any unusual pain

12-week scans

At your 12-week ultrasound pregnancy scan, you’ll be able to see your baby fully-formed. We’ll be able to see the outline of your growing baby’s head, arms, and legs and check everything is developing well – but it’s still a little soon to tell the sex of your baby. We will, though, be able to check for the risk of Down’s syndrome and a low-lying placenta, helping you to make birth plans for later on. We’ll be there to listen and advise during your first baby scan, and after if you need us.

Gender Scans

Scans to confirm the gender of your baby can be accurately performed from 16 weeks of pregnancy. This will be an abdominal scan and you will need to have a comfortably full bladder.

Anomaly scans

This is a detailed scan at 19-23 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy. The aim of this scan is to examine each part of the foetal body including foetal brain, face, spine, heart, stomach, bowel, kidneys and limbs, position of the placenta, assess the amount of amniotic fluid, and measure foetal growth.

Growth scans

This ultrasound scan is usually carried from 24 week of pregnancy to the end.

Aims:

  • Determine whether it is a singleton or multiple pregnancy

  • Confirming the foetal position eg. Breech

  • Measuring the size of the foetal head, abdomen and thigh bone and calculation of an estimate of foetal weight

  • Examinations of the movement of the fetus

  • Checking the placental position and appearance

  • Measurement of the amount of amniotic fluid

  • Assessment of blood flow to the placenta and fetus by colour Doppler ultrasound
