Cancer tests

Make an enquiry

At Virgin Care Private we have a range of tests that we use to test for, detect and diagnose various forms of cancer. During your initial appointment, one of our highly trained consultants will discuss your medical history and make notes on any symptoms you've been experiencing.

If you have symptoms that might indicate you have cancer, your doctor may order a series of tests and take samples to help confirm a diagnosis. In a lot of cases, cancer is not detected and you can usually get back to your normal routine. Testing is the only way to be sure and if further treatment is necessary, this should be started as soon as possible, giving you the best chance at a full recovery.

We offer a wide range of diagnostic tests including blood samples and imaging such as CT and MRI scans. Other tests include BRCA, PSA and HE4, testing for breast & prostate cancer and CA125 testing for ovarian cancer.

Our doctors and consultants pride themselves in giving you the very best service. We ensure that you will be looked after by our experienced and caring team throughout your treatment.

We’re here for:

  • Breast Cancer NGS Panel (BRCA)
  • Ovarian cancer tests (and other serious conditions detected with Cancer Antigen 125 (CA-125))
  • Cervical smear and HPV test
  • Genetic test for hereditary cancer
  • Lung cancer screening with an early CDT lung test
  • Ovarian cancer ultrasound screening
  • Prostate cancer screening - Protein Specific Antigen (PSA)

Breast Cancer NGS Panel (BRCA)

The BRCA gene test is a blood test that uses DNA analysis to identify any harmful changes or mutations in either one of the two breast cancer susceptibility genes. These are known as BRCA1 and BRCA2, if you have inherited mutations in these genes, then you are at an increased risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer compared with the general population.

Cancer Antigen 125 (CA-125)

A CA 125 test is used to measure the amount of CA-125 protein in your blood. It’s used to investigate potential ovarian cancer in women who may be at higher risk or to monitor treatment for ovarian cancer. High levels don’t automatically mean that a cancerous condition is likely and can often point to less serious conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease, liver disease, fibroids pregnancy and menstruation. Positive tests don’t always indicate ovarian cancer, however; we would strongly recommend any woman with a positive test to have a review with a Consultant Gynaecologist.

Human Epididymis Protein 4 (HE4)

HE4 is a relatively new test that is used with CA-125 to monitor women who have been treated for epithelial ovarian cancer. For HE4 to be a useful tumour marker, it must be elevated prior to treatment. Ordering HE4 and CA-125 together provides complementary information and creates a better monitoring system to detect whether treatment has been effective and whether epithelial ovarian cancer has returned.

HE4 is not recommended as a screening test for asymptomatic women because it’s non-specific. Small amounts of HE4 are produced by normal tissues throughout the body and mild elevations may be seen with a variety of non-cancerous conditions.

Combined HE4 & CA125 by ROMA

An HE4 and CA125 blood test helps to detect high levels of the HE4 and CA125 proteins in the blood – a sign of ovarian cancer. We combine the results of the HE4 and CA125 tests to get a ROMA (Risk of Ovarian Malignancy Algorithm) calculation for the risk of finding ovarian cancer during surgery. If high levels of CA125 have been found, but it’s not known whether the cause is ovarian cancer, we might decide with you to carry out an ovarian cancer ultrasound screening to take a closer look at what’s going on inside your body.

Genetic test for hereditary cancer

This is a sequencing based test for hereditary cancer, analysing 30 genes associated with the most common hereditary cancers. This test analyses the most relevant genes for mutations that could increase the risk for eight hereditary cancers: breast, colorectal, melanoma, ovarian, pancreatic, prostate, stomach, and uterine.

We will look at the results to discuss the next steps and look towards a personalised screening and prevention plan to help you manage the risk.

Early CDT lung test

If you smoke or have smoked in the past over a long period of time, you might be at risk of developing lung cancer. A spirometry test or CDT blood test helps to detect signs of lung cancer so we can put a treatment plan in place as soon as possible. We use the EarlyCDT®-Lung Test to help pinpoint the risk and signs of lung cancer even earlier.

Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA)

PSA is a protein produced by both normal cells in the prostate and by prostate cancer cells. A PSA test is a blood test that is used to help detect prostate cancer. It’s normal to have small amounts of PSA in the blood, this amount rises as you get older, enlarging your prostate. A higher PSA level may indicate a problem with your prostate, but not necessarily cancer. Risk factors include a family history of prostate cancer, being of black ethnic origin and being over 50 years of age.

Your Virgin Care Private doctor will use the level of PSA, along with the findings of a physical examination and history to advise you on the likely diagnosis and next steps in management.
