Hearing loss

Hearing loss can be caused be a number of treatable conditions, and can sometimes be caused by something simple like an ear wax blockage. Hearing loss is broadly classified as conductive and sensorineural, with each one requiring a different management approach. At Virgin Care Private, we can quickly diagnose and manage your hearing loss. Some hearing loss can be easily managed with ear wax microsuction removal, while more complicated causes may require surgery or a hearing aid. Seeing an ENT specialist will help you get to the cause of your hearing loss so we can recommend the best treatment for you.

Ear wax removal or microsuction

Ear wax can be a common irritant that can affect your hearing and can sometimes bring ear discomfort. Cotton buds are not designed for removing wax from your ears, but people often use them to clean their ears, and as a result push wax further down the ear canal. We are able to offer ear microsuction performed by a fully GMC-accredited consultant ENT surgeon, and our ear doctors can also perform this procedure. Microsuction is a safer procedure than ear syringing.

Dizziness/vertigo

Dizziness and vertigo are complicated symptoms that can be due to a number of causes. One of these causes is an ear disorder or infection. Common causes may include acute labyrinthitis, BPPV and Meniere’s disease. Our consultant ENT specialist's can assess your cause and develop a treatment plan that then targets the cause of your dizziness or vertigo.

Ear infections

There are many types of ear infection, from outer ear infections to middle ear infections. Some are caused by using cotton buds, swimming, scratching the ear canal, and a common cold. Outer ear infections can be best treated with microsuction ear wax removal and topical antibacterial ear drops. Undergoing careful review and examination by our ENT consultant will help define the exact cause and nature of your ear infection and allow us to recommend the correct treatment.

Nasal blockage/sinusitis

A number of ENT conditions such as adenoid and turbinate enlargement, septal deviation, sinusitis and allergies can cause nasal symptoms. In many cases, patients spend years being incorrectly diagnosed and it’s not until they have seen an ENT specialist and undergone a clinic endoscopic nasal examination that their condition is correctly diagnosed and treated. At Virgin Care Private, we’re able to provide clinic-based endoscopic examinations and treatment plans for your long-standing sinus symptoms.

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and snoring

Over the last few years we have seen increasing research demonstrating the problems that snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea cause (OSA). ENT specialists are well placed to assess the cause of your snoring/OSA and recommend a treatment plan to help you sleep better. The ENT treatment will depend on the area of obstruction. It could be the nasal passages, tonsils, tongue base, palatal or the jaw position. We are able to assess patients to identify which treatment is likely to help them and then provide a treatment plan.

Neck lumps

Neck lumps can be caused by a number of problems from simple skin lesions to cancer. Having neck lumps correctly examined and assessed is vital. We take all neck swelling seriously. Your ENT doctor will carefully examine your neck, looking at your skin, thyroid, lymph nodes, submandibular, parotid glands and your ears. We would also recommend an endoscopic examination to identify the correct cause of your neck lump and help us decide on the best treatment.

Voice change/Swallowing difficulties

Voice changes and swallowing difficulties can be a consequence of a number of problems, from laryngitis to vocal cord cancers. Our clinic endoscopic equipment allows our ENT specialists to examine your throat and voice box and evaluate the cause of your symptoms.

Tongue tie assessment and release

Tongue tie can provide a problem in the new-born child. Tongue tie can prevent breastfeeding and requires a timely release. There has been a trend for tongue tie releases being performed in a non-medical setting by non-doctors. At Virgin Care Private, we have a Consultant Paediatric Specialist ENT Surgeon who will be able to assess your child and divide the tongue tie if required, all within a CQC-accredited medical centre. We can often provide a same day service for tongue tie release to increase the chances of breastfeeding.
